Trying something new
I am a proponent of taking advantage of all opportunities offered to you. So, after getting the basics of journalism down in the 2020-2021 school year, I started to branch out. Recently, I've been attempting photography and design work. I found that I really enjoy both! For our December 2021 edition of the Highlander Magazine, I took most of the action photos for my spread. Not only was photography a new experience for me, but so was magazine writing - especially having the central piece, "The Scotlight," on my first attempt. However, I didn't back down, and I designed my own spread for our February 2022 issue. After designing this issue, I was approached by a Highlander editor asking me to join the Highlander team. I am now interning as a Highlander editor. This experience with editing has also pushed me to try new things, like the Heritage Fair package I put together with a co-coordinator. This was very design based, but I was confident enough from my experiences with the Highlander to create a whole website, which was a personal accomplishment.
This spread was my first design. After doing a more serious feature piece for my first magazine piece, I wanted to try something more unique to the magazine. I decided to design my spread for this issue, inspired by movies.
I completely wrote and designed this spread by myself, which was a special experience. I had never considered how much work magazine editors did before I completed that work myself. This spread gave me experience with InDesign and won Second Place for Spread Design with JEA NorCal.
